Reading for Teachers

Paper Castle

Paper Castle is a web app that teaches students to read using a systematic synthetic phonics approach. It is designed not to conflict with other phonics systems and to be completed independently by the student, so it works very well as extra practice. The ten-minute daily practice sequentially develops all of the key phonics skills. It also efffectively supports phonics intervention.

Development

Paper Castle is the result of a decade of teacher development, involving two previous apps and countless paper-based systems. There is a strong research foundation covering everything from which fonts are easiest for young readers, to the effects of incremental rehearsal on delayed retrieval.

Getting Started

Getting started is easy. As it's a web app, it can be run through any browser or installed on an iPad as a web app. It's free to use and requires no login, which makes it easy to trial with a class. Below you will find a link to launch the app, a full guide, and related resources.
